Finally, the bright summer and festive season has arrived and Malta has many feasts in store for locals and passers-by. Usually there are around 60 feasts in Malta and 20 in Gozo yearly. These extravagant traditions were introduced under the rule of the Knights of Saint John.
During feats we celebrate different patron saints. Key parts of the celebrations include; band marches, religious processions, community gatherings, fireworks and traditional Maltese delicacies and sweets.
The ideal and best feast depends on what you define as a good time. For those who like to dip their feet into the light festa way, the Mosta feast on the 15th of August is very suitable and family orientated. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more extreme and intense kind of feast, you may be interested in the feast in Zurrieqtal-Madonna tal-Karmnu that takes place in July. You could also visit the rival feast in Zurrieq of Santa Katerina that takes place during the first weekend of September. If you’re a firework fanatic, I highly suggest the feasts that take place in Mqabba or Lija. However, if you happen to be in Gozo towards the end of August, it would be interesting to visit Ghajnslielem for the celebration of our Lady of Loreto which is on the smaller of the scale compared to those of Zurrieq.
These are just a few of the many feasts and events that take place in our beautiful island. An unforgettable experience exposing individuals to various cultural and traditional aspects of the Maltese way of life.
